Daniel Island

DANIEL ISLAND

Overview
If there is a fantasy island comes true, it goes by the name Daniel Island – where demanding modern tastes and amenities have been perfectly blended into the pristine coastal scenery of South Carolina.

This beautifully-planned island community only ten minutes from downtown Charleston is technically part of the city of Charleston, although separated by a substantial buffer of 23 miles of rivers, marshes and creeks. Once an isolated island farm and game preserve, Daniel Island was painstakingly planned as an exclusive suburb annexed to Charleston.

Boasting a private country club with a nationally-ranked, 18-hole Tom Fazio golf course, a second course underway designed by Rees Jones, and a 17-court tennis center that is home to the internationally-prestigious Family Circle Cup, Daniel Island is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. The island features community boat ramps and crabbing docks, as well as hundreds of acres of parks and a private nature preserve, plus a chic, limited commercial district that features upscale shopping and cozy restaurants.

Recognized by the Urban Land Institute's prestigious "Awards for Excellence" program, Daniel Island is a place where traditional neighborhoods and a vibrant downtown enjoy a spectacular setting, surrounded by rivers and creeks and beautiful marsh views. It is a place where people live and work and play and learn. A place with a unique mix of shops and businesses, schools and churches, and a never-ending list of recreational options. Welcome to Charleston, South Carolina's island town.

Daniel Island is a traditional town where you can live in charming neighborhoods with beautiful parks and tree-lined streets. Where homes are built with careful attention to detail. And where all of the conveniences of modern living shops, schools, restaurants and more are close by. Residents here enjoy a vibrant community and the gentle pace of a self-sufficient small town where neighbors know one another and take the time to stop and say hello.

History
To live on Daniel Island is to inhabit a place rich with history. Once home to a Native American tribe known as the Etiwan, the island later was inhabited by some of the first English settlers who arrived to establish the port city of Charles Town. These early landowners used the island's fertile land mainly for farming and established some of the most productive plantations in the region. Over the years portions of the island passed through various owners until, in 1947, the prominent Guggenheim family of New York purchased the entire island for cattle ranching and a family hunting retreat. When Harry Frank Guggenheim passed away, the land passed to his foundation, which sponsored a group of some of the top urban visionaries from around the country to develop a master plan to ensure the island would be responsibly developed. The island was sold to the Daniel Island Company in 1997 and today is being developed in accordance to the vision outlined in the master plan.
